Dublin houses

What Dublin homes need from a painter

Dublin’s houses change from one street to the next, and each kind needs its own preparation. Victorian and Edwardian red-brick terraces, in areas like Rathmines, Ranelagh and Drumcondra, have lime plaster, ornate cornices, sash windows and solid walls that need to breathe. See how we approach a Victorian façade in Dublin.

Suburban semi-ds and bungalows are mostly pebble dash or smooth render. Pebble dash takes far more paint than smooth render, and the green algae that grows on north-facing walls has to be killed before anything is painted over it.

By the sea, from Clontarf and Howth to Sandymount and Dalkey, salt air and wind wear paint on walls, windows and doors faster, so preparation and a flexible exterior finish matter even more. Our weather-proofing guide goes into the detail.

Apartments come with building rules on access, working hours and common areas. For those, see our guide to painting a Dublin apartment and the city-centre benchmarks we work to.

How a job runs

Our Dublin painting process

Every job, inside or out, runs in the same order.

  1. Visit and quote

We come out to see the rooms or the outside of the house, talk through colours and timing, and send a written quote. You see the full scope of work before we open a single tin of paint.

  2. Protect

Furniture is moved and covered and floors go under heavy-duty drop cloths. Outside, windows are masked and paths and plants covered.

  3. Prepare

Filling, sanding and caulking inside. A fungicidal wash, crack repair and priming outside. Most of the time on a job goes here.

  4. Paint

Finish coats in trade paints suited to each surface. Outside, only on days dry and warm enough for the paint to cure.

  5. Clean up every day

A full clean-up at the end of every day, so you can use your home in the evening.

  6. Walkthrough

A final walkthrough with you, checking every room and wall before we call the job done.

  • I can not reccomend Radu and Sergei highly enough. They are efficient, professional, polite and have amazing attention to detail. Nothing is a problem! They have done inside and outside of our home to perfection, and we would not use any other painter…. Thanks again to you both, Siobhan and Jeff

  • Serghei & Radu recently painted our entire home. The quality and finish of their workmanship is exceptional. They are two of the nicest and most accommodating professionals we have had the pleasure of working with. 100% recommend for anyone looking for domestic or commercial work to be completed.

  • S&R Paint did an incredible job on our home, and the overall quality is outstanding. The finish has held up wonderfully against the humid Irish weather with zero issues over time! Communication was seamless throughout, and you can truly see how much craftsmanship matters to the team. We’ll definitely be reaching out to them again for our next project. Highly recommend!

Meet the founders

Who does the work

Serghei and Radu founded S&R Paint, and they still do the work themselves. They come out to see the house, help you choose colours and paint it, from the preparation to the walkthrough at the end.

Strongly recommend – Serghei and Radu painted the whole inside of our house and the quality of the job was fantastic. On top, they are respectful, easily work around young family schedules, and they work hard (and quietly!)

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Something else? Ask us or call 085 747 4730.

How often should I repaint my Dublin home’s exterior?

There’s no fixed number of years: it depends on the surface, the paint and how exposed the house is. We suggest a look at the walls and woodwork every few years. Signs it is due are flaking or chalky paint, green algae on north-facing walls, hairline cracks in the render and bare timber on windowsills. Houses near the sea and walls facing the wind usually need attention sooner.

Do you provide commercial painting in Dublin?

Yes. Most of our commercial work is in residential buildings, such as apartment blocks and their common areas, and we sometimes paint offices and other commercial interiors. Weekend or bank holiday work is sometimes possible, where capacity allows. What separates a painting specialist from a general builder is set out in commercial painters Dublin vs general contractors.

Will there be a mess?

We treat your home like our own. Furniture and floors go under heavy-duty drop cloths, and we do a full clean-up at the end of every day. When we leave, the only sign we were there should be the new paint.

How do you price a job?

Every home is different, so we visit, look at the surfaces and quote for your property. You see the full scope of work in writing before we open a single tin of paint. The interior and exterior painting pages explain what affects the cost.

Do you cover my part of Dublin?

Yes. We work across all of County Dublin, from Skerries to Kilternan and from Lucan to Howth, as well as in Bray, Greystones, Kilcoole, Wicklow and Celbridge. See the areas we cover.

Can you paint the inside and outside of my house in one job?

Yes. Whole-house painting puts the interior and exterior into one plan and one written quote, with the outside booked for the drier months.

Do you paint apartments?

Yes. Apartments come with building rules on access, parking, working hours and the common areas, and we plan the job around them. Our guide to painting a Dublin apartment covers what to check first.
